Therefore a whole school approach has been adopted to cater for the needs of G & T students. The Gifted P/G at MCK based on the CEO Position Paper adopting the Principles of the Gagne Differentiated Model Of Giftedness ‘ DMGT 2.0” . The Gagne Model “ differentiates between natural abilities ( gifts or aptitudes ) and systematically developed skills( talents)”

MARIST COLLEGE KOGARAH MISSION & VISION STATEMENT

PROVISION FOR GIFTED STUDENTS

Challenge classes exist in Years 7, 8, 9 and 10.

Students are selected for Challenge Class on the basis of Diagnostic Testing, teacher recommendations and in- school performance, outstanding achievement & demonstrating creative & critical thinking skills.


LEARNING ENRICHMENT

Withdrawal of small group classes in Years 7-10 two periods a cycle.

ABILITY GROUPED ACADEMIC CLASSES:

Ability grouping enables top classes to work at a faster pace, explore content at greater depth and utilise (H.O.T.S) higher order thinking skills and e-learning.

  • Mathematics (Year 8-12) ability grouped Mathematics classes at all levels. Differentiated Curriculum.
  • Science : Year 9 & 10 a top class & remaining are mixed ability.

UNSW GERRIC HOLIDAY

Programmes are advertised/promoted and students encouraged to attend. Some staff members run these specialised p/g’s for Gifted students.

DIFFERENTIATED ASSESSMENTS

Tiered Assessment Tasks are differentiated assessment Tasks developed based on level of students needs. Tasks are designed to provide a better instructional match between students and their individual needs.

I.Q. TESTING:

Selected students are I.Q. tested to determine their level of Giftedness enabling staff to tailor curriculum to their needs.

CURRICULUM DIFFENTIATING

Gifted students are diverse in their levels of Giftedness & their levels of abilities therefore the differentiated Curriculum offers learning styles to enable the student to learn in mixed ability, self contained gifted classrooms & small tutorial groups with like minded peers.

STAFF DEVELOPMENT

All members of staff at MCK are encouraged to develop expertise in Gifted Ed.
The Mini- Certificate of Gifted Education was conducted by CEO in conjunction with GERRIC at the College in 2009 with 20 staff completing the Course.
A number of staff undertaking the COGE ( Certificate of Gifted Ed ) through UNSW & GERRIC.
MCK is an active member of GASTA ( Gifted & Talented Secondary Teachers Assoc. )
Teachers have access to appropriate professional development & are encouraged & supported in attendance at In-Service Courses, lectures & Conferences On Gifted Ed.
